Aging in Paradise
The aim of this project was to create an ADA compliant and multigenerational residence for the Smith couple and their family to age-in-place. This design solution manifested in wide clearances for wheelchair users as well as a neutral color palette to soothe the eyes. Materials were specified to minimize glare as well as provide varying colors and textures to assist in wayfinding and stimulate cognition. Additionally, the clients wanted to incorporate local materials into the design. Natural stone and wood products were chosen from the area surrounding the site in Breckenridge, CO.
The concept guiding creating of the Smith home is warmth. This is communicated through textured hand renderings as well as the materials chosen such as upholstery, window treatments, and warm wood finishes.
The perspective view below conveys the wide clearances and high level of control users have over the space. The moodboard below conceptualizes the design of the main living spaces. Lastly, the plan view of the kitchen demonstrates ten ADA-compliant features. Similarly, the section view shows related features such as adjustable shades and the opening beneath the sink to accommodate a wheelchair user.
